The deepfakes used voice cloning and lip-syncing technology to manipulate genuine interviews, making Musk appear to endorse radical investment opportunities promising rapid returns. These videos cost just a few dollars to produce and could be made in minutes using readily available AI tools. The scams were promoted extensively on social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube, with hundreds of thousands of ads identified. Steve Beauchamp, an 82-year-old retiree, lost over $690,000 after seeing what he believed was a genuine Musk endorsement. Another victim, Heidi Swan, lost over $10,000. According to Sensity, which analyzed over 2,000 deepfakes, Musk appeared in nearly 25% of all deepfake scams since late 2023 and 90% of cryptocurrency-focused deepfake videos. The scammers, primarily based in India, Russia, China and Eastern Europe, used these videos to lure victims into fake trading platforms, gradually extracting larger sums through false claims of increasing returns and additional fees.
