A Massachusetts high school student and another classmate used AI tool Grammarly to generate content for an AP US History project, copying and pasting text including fake citations, leading to academic discipline including failing grades and detention.
In December 2023, a junior at Hingham High School in Massachusetts and another student used Grammarly, an AI tool, to complete an AP US History documentary project. The students copied and pasted AI-generated text directly into their script without proper citation or acknowledgment of AI use. The submission included citations to nonexistent books that were AI hallucinations, such as 'Lee, Robert. Hoop Dreams: A Century of Basketball. Los Angeles: Courtside Publications, 2018.' When submitted through Turnitin.com, the platform flagged portions as AI-generated. Teacher Susan Petrie found that the student spent only 52 minutes working on the document compared to 7-9 hours by other students. Additional AI detection tools Draft Back and Chat Zero confirmed AI usage. The school determined this violated academic integrity policies despite students being permitted to use AI for brainstorming and source identification. Both students received failing grades on parts of the project, Saturday detention, and the student was initially barred from National Honor Society selection. The parents filed a federal lawsuit claiming no specific AI rules existed in the handbook, but US Magistrate Judge Paul Levenson ruled in favor of the school, finding the AI use violated existing academic integrity policies.
